GGD GHOR Nederland reports that more than half of Dutch residents aged 16 to 25 experienced mental health complaints such as anxiety and depression last year, based on the 2022 Coronavirus Health Monitor for Young Adults Did. This group included many urban women and young adults. Loneliness and suicidal thoughts were common.
According to the governing body of GGD Health Services, monitors (a questionnaire filled out by about 70,000 young people between April and August 2022) indicated that most cases involved minor complaints. However, half of those with mental health problems indicated that they had had suicidal thoughts at least once in the year before the study. It was common.
Nearly two-thirds of respondents were lonely at the time of the survey. Her quarter of these young people report feeling “very lonely.” The study found that loneliness was most common among young adults who were actually educated, women, and those living alone. It was associated with both family and social loneliness when contact with acquaintances was lost.
“We are concerned about the mental health of young people. It is good to know the biggest problems and which groups are battling it. It shows that it is necessary,” said GGD GHOR Director Ton Koenen.
A spokesperson for GGD GHOR could not explain why women suffer from mental illness so frequently. “This is under further analysis.”
Based on this study, GGD’s governing body was also unable to say to what extent the coronavirus period has caused mental health complaints. Nearby responded that they needed help and support because they were “not feeling well” due to the pandemic, so “it certainly had an impact,” he said.
GGD GHOR noted that people with poor mental health may be more likely to participate in the study, so the results may be more negative than they actually are.
