OU Issues Kashrut Warning After Jelly Belly Changes Factory Processes

The Orthodox Union, one of the world’s most widely accepted kashrut organizations, has issued a warning about Jelly Belly’s sugar-sweetening practices after a change in the factory’s processes altered its kashrut status.
“Jelly Belly has informed Orthodox Union that due to changes at one of its factories, Jelly Belly products produced at that location will soon no longer be kosher,” Orthodox Union wrote. “While there has been no change to Jelly Belly’s formula, the production changes will result in other non-kosher products being produced in shared facilities.”
As a result, all Jelly Belly products sold outside of North America will soon be sold in packaging without the OU symbol, according to the alert. Some Jelly Belly products made in limited quantities in North America, primarily seasonal products, will also no longer have the OU symbol.
“Jelly Belly jelly beans sold in North America will continue to be produced under OU oversight, and most retail-sized varieties seen on store shelves in North America will remain certified,” they wrote. “Consumers are encouraged to look for the OU symbol on all Jelly Belly packaging before purchasing the product.”
