Orange County therapist sees higher number of children with mental health issues

She said it is important for parents to take steps now, such as consulting with their children and letting them know someone is going.

“They may not necessarily need mental health help, but we don’t help children’s mental health until you’re in the ER.

A recent study by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that from 2016 to 2021, the number of emergency room visits for mental illness, anxiety and depression among children ages 5 to 19 increased.

Eschlemann said it’s important for parents to spend one-on-one time with their children in combating mental health issues.

“We all need someone who is safe to talk to, so let that child or teenager know that you are a safe speaker,” said Eschlemann.
