GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan was the top online gambling state in the nation in terms of revenue generated last year.
According to , the state generated $1.92 billion, outpacing New Jersey in total revenue by $115,000. Associated Press.
Legalization has generated millions of dollars in state taxes, but counselors and therapists at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services have also seen an increase in the number of people struggling with addiction.
“If you put an app on your phone, it’s just for fun. I know people who say, ‘I spent $300 in three minutes because I just pressed a button,'” says the licensed counselor and therapist. said Scott Smith.
Since online gambling began in Michigan in 2021, he has seen a significant increase in patients battling addiction.
“I know people who have their cell phones with them, even when they’re driving, and they gamble on the way home or on the way home from work,” Smith said.
One reason this number is so high could be that some states allow online sports betting but not other gambling games. Michigan allows both.
For people with addictions, Smith said they start by looking at why they turn to digital platforms.
“Is it to make money? Is it because they’re bored? Is it good for dopamine release? If you can identify why they’re using it, that’s a good start. Can I replace it with something else that might be healthier?” Smith said.
Patients can even ban themselves from the platform, but the process can take time and is not the same.
“For some of them, you can unrestrict yourself by simply restarting. Some restrictions have social security numbers tied to them, so you can’t log back in to any platform. ,” Smith said.
Smith believes that as more users register, online gambling addiction will become more of a problem.
“I’d be surprised if it decreased. I’m not one for it, and I’m not predicting it, but I think the sooner phones are put into people’s hands for generations, the more it will become a part of their lives. I understand,” Smith said.
