‘One of a kind’ youth mental health facility comes to the central coast

Local health leaders are calling mental illness the biggest public health problem of our generation. In response, Montage Health announced a brand new facility dedicated to youth mental health called the “Ohana Campus.'' Montage leaders say this brand new facility is the most unique in the nation because of its approach to treating these problems. It's bothering the community. The facility's goal is to become a mecca for prevention and treatment, and ultimately a place where young patients can find a cure. One in five young people suffer from mental health issues. Health experts say overuse of social media, isolation during the pandemic, global instability and the rise in opioids are all contributing factors. “It's important to make a statement about youth mental health. We're investing in it. We're eliminating the stigma.” Dr. Stephen Packer, President and CEO of Monterey Peninsula Regional Hospital and Montage Health said, “We are creating a healing environment where young people can feel really comfortable and looked after.'' Normandy Filcek is 17 years old. She is a senior in high school and a patient/youth counselor at Ohana. Investing in children like her will create a ripple effect for generations to come, she said. “Right now, it's easy to get caught up in a vicious cycle because of how important everything is. Now, it's easy for kids to realize what weight they carry in the world. “I think it's really important that what actually matters to them is more important than what they feel is important in the moment,” Filczek said. This facility is made possible by her gift of more than $100 million. It has unique features such as a quiet reflection space, a music room, and even a gym. Medical staff are trained to assist patients from the moment of crisis to preventive treatment. As well as being a medical center, schools and faith-based communities will also play an important role. Ohana means family in Hawaiian, and Montage Health leaders say involving a child's family is central to their approach. 'This is more than just a place to leave your child for an hour and come back. “It's important to make a statement about young people's mental health. We're investing in it and destigmatizing it. We're making a statement about young people's mental health.
