Ogden School District’s new child nutrition facility aims to serve district families

OGDEN — The Ogden School District has opened a new facility to serve the community in a variety of ways.

The Child Nutrition Program building at 1950 Monroe Blvd. — At the district's administrative campuses — the district will be able to purchase and store more dry and frozen goods while eliminating reliance on off-site food storage.

This facility provides a central location for all child nutrition staff to receive training in commercial grade kitchen space. It also gives Ogden School District students the opportunity to gain the experience they need to work for local businesses.

The facility will also further expand the district's programs for students with special needs.

“Cooking has become an integral part of Ogden's programs for students with disabilities,” Karen Harrop, the district's special education program director, said in a statement. “This is an effective and motivating way for students to develop many skills that will be useful throughout their lives. It has been used to develop a variety of skills, including “skills'' that increase independence in daily living skills and pave the way for employment and educational opportunities in post-high school education programs in the culinary field. Ta. ”

In addition, the new facility will MarketStar Student Resource Center — Opening in 2021 — will serve as a central hub for Ogden students and their families to receive food, clothing, cleaning and hygiene products, school supplies and more.

The district said the operation “quickly exceeded” the capacity of the original location. Officials hope the new location will help improve Ogden households in need of district assistance.

“Research shows that students whose basic needs are not met are less likely to succeed in the classroom and are at higher risk of dropping out of school.The resources we can provide through the MarketStar Student Resource Center are “We will help fill the gaps by providing clothing, school supplies, hygiene products and other household items for all students and their families in the district,” said Bryn Murdock, executive director of the Ogden School Foundation. said in a statement. “As a foundation, we are proud of the opportunity this resource center and new support center will provide our students.
