SCARBOROUGH – Dr. Edward A. Greco, Jr., 91, of Scarborough passed away peacefully at home with his beloved family.

Dr. Greco was born in Portland on September 10, 1931. He was the son of the late Dr. Edward A. Greco and Dr. Katherine R. (Rasmussen) Greco. Edward grew up in Portland and graduated from Chebbles High School in 1949. After his graduation, Edward attended Georgetown University and earned his Bachelor of Science degree. After graduating from college, Edward was drafted into the United States Army from 1953 until he was in 1955. While in the Army stationed in Colorado, he met his lifelong lover and best friend Rose Irene (Bertis) Greco.

Edward and Rose married in 1955. After being discharged from the Army, he and Rose moved to Burlington, Vermont, where Edward attended the University of Vermont medical school. Upon completion of his medical education and training specializing in cardiology, Edward returned to Maine to practice medicine under his father, Edward A. Greco, his senior doctor. He and his father were also staff physicians at Portland’s Mercy Hospital. Edward has been Mercy’s cardiologist for over 50 years. Throughout Edward’s medical career, Rose was his life partner managing his clinic and advocating for patient care. Edward retired from medicine in his 2010.

Edward enjoyed fly fishing and hunting. For over 40 years, he made annual trips to Colorado to hunt, fish, and visit family. He was good at tying flies and making fly rods. He was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed the beauty of nature. Later in life, Edward enjoyed woodworking projects with his grandchildren. He was an avid reader throughout his life.

Edward and Rose were devout Catholics and members of Holy Cross Church in South Portland. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a gentle, thoughtful, soft-spoken, and kind-hearted person.

Dr. Edward A. Greco Jr. passed away in 2012 by his wife, Rose Greco.

He is survived by two sons, Edward A. Greco of South Carolina, III and his wife Anita Greco, and Thomas J. Greco of Bidford and his wife Sally Williams. Four daughters of Jude Greco of Nevada, Louisa Greco and her husband Quimbert Tzee of Montreal, Canada, Catherine and James Troiano of South Portland, and Christine and Joseph Calesio of Missouri. One stepdaughter, Carol Flanigan of Arizona. Nine grandchildren of Jennifer Rose Flanigan, Philip Greco, Ryan Greco, Stephanie Greco, Nicholas Troiano, Sam Troiano, Joseph Calesio, John Calesio and Vivian Rose Calesio. Four great-grandchildren, Jayden Rose Flanigan, Evalina Rose Matos, Sebastian Greco and Lucas Greco.

Visiting hours to celebrate the life of Dr. Edward A. Greco Jr. will be held on Thursday, November 10, from 8:30-10:30 am at the Conroy Talley-Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland . It will be read at 10:15 am. Christian Burial Mass is celebrated at 11:00 AM at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. The burial will be private.
