NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull Wins 2024 IPRO Quality Award
Woodhull Hospital was recognized for reducing the use of urinary and central venous catheters and achieving six consecutive quarters of zero central venous catheter-associated bloodstream infections.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull was named a 2024 IPRO Quality Award winner for reducing urinary and central venous catheter use and achieving six consecutive quarters without a central venous catheter-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI). This hospital-wide effort involved inpatient medical, surgical, and intensive care unit clinical teams. During daily interdisciplinary rounds, the team assessed each case in which a central venous or urinary catheter was used to see if alternatives could be used instead, contributing to the prompt removal of these invasive devices when no longer clinically necessary. This intervention enhanced team communication, improved collaboration, and reduced central venous and urinary catheter use, resulting in an overall reduction in central venous catheter-associated infections. Woodhull Hospital: IPRO Hospital Quality Improvement Contract (HQIC)is a federal program funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) that focuses on improving the quality of care provided to Medicare patients across the United States.

Winners celebrated at IPRO’s 40th anniversary ceremonyNumber The annual meeting, held on June 11, also featured speakers at the event on how AI can help transform long-term care. Also featured were a keynote address, “How AI Can Transform Long-Term Care,” by Dr. Timothy Hoff, professor of management, health systems and health policy at Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business and School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs in Boston, Massachusetts, and a presentation on “Collaborating for Quality” by Kathleen Otte, administrator of the CMS New York Regional Office.
