INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — April is National Minority Health Month, dedicated to spreading awareness about persistent health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities.
“Nourishing Our Roots: Cultivating Conversations on Black Maternal Health” Event Sponsored Meramama’s mother wellS The rally was held on April 13 and focused on spreading awareness and advocacy for Black maternal and child health.
Sierra Woods is Meramama’s maternal healthPace Healing Helpers CEO Alicia Pace and volunteer Ashley Porter joined Daybreak on Monday to sum up the event.
“We actually had a lot of different people come out, including moms, grandmas, community health workers, everyone in the Mela Mama support space,” Woods said.
Pace told News 8 anchor Hannah Muldaugh that this event will help people become more aware of this ongoing issue and advocate for mothers who may be in this situation. He said he hopes so.
“Overall, I think it’s important that communities become more aware and able to advocate for mothers who may find themselves in such situations, because many of these maternal deaths are preventable. Because we know other statistics that say it’s possible,” she said. So why aren’t we taking steps to make sure these mothers go home to care for their babies? This should be a celebratory moment in their life. ”
