by Universalwellnesssystems

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Norway, while other prizes such as literature and economics are awarded in Sweden.

Early October is Nobel Prize season. Over six days, the names of six award winners will be announced from around the world, adding several new faces to the world’s most elite roster of scientists, authors, economists and human rights leaders.

This year’s Nobel Prize season kicks off with a prize in medicine on Monday, followed by daily presentations in physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, and literature on Thursday. The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the economics prize will be announced on his October 10th.

Here are five other things to know about the coveted prize.

Who Created the Nobel Prize?

  • The prizes in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace were established by the will of wealthy Swedish businessman and inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel. The first prize was awarded to him in 1901, five years after Nobel’s death.
  • Each prize is worth 10 million kroner (approximately $900,000) and is awarded with a diploma and gold medal on December 10, the day Nobel died in 1896.
  • The Economics Prize – officially the Swedish Bank Prize for Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel – was created in 1968 by the Central Bank of Sweden, not by Nobel.
  • Between 1901 and 2021, 609 Nobel Prizes and economics prizes have been awarded.

Who knows why anyone wins?

  • Nobel Prize law prohibits judges from discussing deliberations for 50 years. So it will probably take a while to know for sure how the judges made her 2022 selection and who was on the shortlist.
  • Judges try hard not to divulge any hints about the winners before they are announced, but occasionally rumors circulate. European bookmakers sometimes offer odds on potential Peace Prize and Nobel Prize winners.

Who can nominate candidates?

  • Thousands of people around the world are eligible to submit nominations for the Nobel Prize.
  • They include university professors, legislators, former Nobel laureates, and members of the committee themselves.
  • Nominations are kept secret for 50 years, but those who submit nominations may, among other things, publicly announce their proposal for the Nobel Peace Prize.

What is your connection with Norway?

  • The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Norway and other prizes are awarded in Sweden. That’s the way Alfred Nobel wanted it.
  • His exact reasons are unknown, but during his lifetime Sweden and Norway were in an alliance that dissolved in 1905. Oslo.

What does it take to win a Nobel Prize?

  • For one, patience. Scientists often have to wait decades for their work to be recognized by Nobel Prize judges who want to ensure that any breakthrough stands the test of time.
  • This is a departure from Nobel’s will, which stated that the Nobel Prize should be given to “those who have brought the greatest benefit to mankind during the preceding year.” The Peace Prize Committee is the only committee that regularly recognizes the achievements of the previous year.
  • According to Nobel’s wish, the prize should be given to “the person who has done the most or the best work for the friendship between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies, for holding and promoting peace conferences.”
