Everyone has been there, right? A post-Yom Tov resolution to embrace a healthier lifestyle. It usually takes place immediately after Sukos or after the last matzah disappears after Pesach. We enthusiastically sign up at our local gym and commit to a new fitness commitment. The first few weeks are great, he goes to the gym three times a week and feels like a fitness champion.
And then life happens. When a neighborhood parlor meeting takes place, that exercise session is suddenly replaced with a plate of sesame chicken and community hocks. The next night, your family has a simcha or yeshiva dinner, and you find yourself putting your exercise routine on the back burner. At this point, canceling your gym membership seems like a logical step. Why aren't you using the gym?
So you go online to the gym's website, hoping for an easy cancellation option. After all, who needs the guilt trip of going straight to the gym and canceling your workout in front of a roomful of people? Unfortunately, there is no clear way to cancel online. After clicking for a while, I can't help but wonder if I'm the only one looking to break up with Jim or if this is a common struggle.
Well, no need to worry. Our elected officials heard the collective groans of those who don't go to the gym and decided to do something about it. After lengthy meetings and debates, the bill passed the state House and Senate and landed on Governor Murphy's desk. Today, he signed it into law.
Governor Phil Murphy has officially signed off on A3892/S2952, a game-changer for New Jersey gym users. The law requires online gym subscription services to provide clear and easy-to-access online cancellation options. The place where a subscriber can initiate a cancellation must be accessible and conspicuous on the gym provider's website, within their personal account profile. If not, you can also complete it through the cancellation email template provided by the service.
With this legislation, Governor Murphy hopes to protect New Jerseyans from confusing and strict gym subscription cancellation policies. So the next time you say goodbye to your gym membership, it won't feel like an uphill battle on the treadmill. A huge thank you to Senate President Nicholas Scutari, Senator Gordon Johnson, Congressman Paul Moriarty, Congresswoman Valina Reynolds-Jackson, Congresswoman Angela McKnight, and others for making this possible. Canceling a gym membership in New Jersey is now much easier.
