NH Business: Prioritizing Employee Mental Health in New Hampshire

The pandemic has underscored the need for mental health resources, and New Hampshire businesses are working to provide them to their employees.

Welcome to business in Hampshire. Fred Culver. As the pandemic enters his third year, mental health has become his top five priority for businesses losing workers in New Hampshire. I know the urgent spotlight on mental health in the state workforce has emerged from the statewide conference by New Hampshire Business and Social Responsibility. Organizations of all sectors and sizes were asked what are the most important issues they need to focus on right now and what they found. Mental health was featured as one of the top priorities. Well, here’s what launched in New Hampshire this month: It puts the spotlight on mental health and the workplace, provides resources for businesses, and provides access to professionals and programs. Partners include New Hampshire Businesses for Social Responsibility, National Alliance for Mental Illness Dartmouth Health, You and H. Brown Center, and National Council for Mental Wellbeing and Spectrum Wellness. To illustrate what this looks like statewide right now, Genat Jones is the Program Director of New Hampshire Businesses in Concord for Social Responsibility. Thank you very much. He also teaches sustainable strategy at Southern New Hampshire University, Harvard and Ross He Gibson is CEO of Evacuation Group in Brattleboro in June and also consults on employee benefits strategy. Welcome to you two. Thank you Zena. How strong were your business members’ feelings that mental health was a current priority in the workforce? We expected that. I expected it to show up as one of the problems, but I didn’t expect its priority and presence. By far he was number one among the listed priorities. So coming out of the pandemic, in particular, has emerged as a very big concern. The issue is even bigger than his 2020. Mental health issues were not discussed in the workplace and tended to be brought up in the workplace, but after the pandemic, with the changes, everyone made a big resignation to that priority. work and home environment. Everything started bubbling. And, as seen from a national survey of employers, 86% said mental health stress burnout was a priority, and 49% didn’t have a formal wellness strategy for their employees. Do you have any idea how many new businesses in the state have mental health wellness programs for their employees? I have a survey. I have some statistics. They do not reflect a complete New Hampshire presence. But we tend to think it’s in the minority. Also, mental health below 30% is not a benefit that is typically offered. And it’s not that it’s perceived as having more benefits than it actually is for what it is. It does more than just provide the benefits you need. Structures, cultures and many other things are in place. ROSS YOUR GROUP is helping us roll out this initiative on mental health in our new business. what does it look like? Some things, Fred. One is that we work. We call it Mental First Aid Training and we help organizations develop mental health basic first responders. So people who can identify employees who may be struggling with the mental health side of things and triage them out of becoming therapists. Please become a counselor. But be at the forefront of it so you can be on the lookout before things get even worse. Another thing we help organizations do is look at their level of psychological safety. And this is new terminology. We’ve done a great job of making our organization physically secure and compliant with ADA and all that stuff. But our organization is psychologically safe and, where the focus is, we are on the front lines of supervisors and leaders. They make all the difference between people with great work experiences and those who may be exacerbating underlying mental health issues. HR MYSELF IN THE PAST, yes. I applaud what you are doing. i know what i need Thanks to Jones of New Hampshire Business and Ross Gibson of The Richards Group for this briefing on Social Responsibility. If you missed some, you can go to WMUR DOT COM WHERE
