Those looking to stay active in Newmarket will soon have another option as the City of Newmarket opens a brand new fitness center at the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex on March 18th.
The City of Newmarket has completed the renovation of the facility’s multipurpose room into a fitness center and is ready to open. With membership accessed through the town’s rec pass system, the town said the facility should offer something similar to Magna Center’s popular fitness facility.
“Newmarket’s new fitness center provides convenient access to recreation and further opportunities to stay active,” the municipality said on social media on March 15.
The council approved the move in June, and the cost is expected to be about $135,000, which officials estimate will be more than offset by a “conservative” membership estimate of 1,200.
“Now is the time to move forward with the addition of a fitness center, given the positive financial impact and enhanced services to the community,” the staff report said.
Council members spoke positively about the proposal, noting that it would provide a more convenient location than Magna Center for many residents.
Ray Twinny, like Magna Center, will offer group fitness and aquafit classes for adults and youth, according to the city’s website. Memberships with unlimited access are available for $37.50 per month for adults, $27.50 for youth and children, or $62.50 for households.
Passes are available below newmarket.ca/recpass Or a customer service kiosk in town.
The town will also hold a grand opening celebration the following week, March 25, at 5 p.m., with a ribbon cutting, refreshments and prizes.
