New research funding to help shape future health and social care policies

York University’s Center for Health Economics (CHE) has received £11m funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to lead two Policy Research Units (PRU).


These units are five-year research programs to support policy makers in the Department of Health and Social Care and independent organizations such as NHS England and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. The PRU not only addresses long-term policy research needs, but also responds to emerging and rapid policy demands.

of Economic evaluation methods in medical intervention PRU (EEPRU) is the yoke and University of Sheffield. Its mission is to assess the value for money of treatments, medical technologies, services and policies related to health and social care. Develop valuation methodologies and policy frameworks to ensure value for money from public funds.

of Economics of Health and Social Welfare Systems PRU (ESHCRU) was awarded to York in collaboration with London School of Economics and Politics Science. Its mission is to apply insights from the economics discipline to address long-standing problems facing the health and social security systems and improve the way their various parts interact.

Professor Mark Scalfer, Director of CHE and Co-Director of EEPRU, said, “CHE has been funding these two units since 2010, and they are an excellent source for conducting long-term research that directly impacts policy decisions. We provide a platform,” he said.

ESHCRU Director Professor Anne Mason added, “It is a great honor to receive this award.” “In this extremely difficult time for the NHS and social care, we are honored to play our part in helping the system recover from the pandemic and move towards a more resilient and sustainable future. “

Professor Lucy Chappell, NIHR Chief Scientific Advisor and DHSC Chief Executive, said: The NIHR’s new Policy Research Unit is designed to make policy assessments powerful. This will enable governments and related organizations to act on the latest evidence when making decisions about medical and social care that may affect us all. ”

Maria Caulfield, Minister for Women’s Health Strategy, said: “20 new research hubs will bring together leading experts to tackle a range of issues such as end-of-life care, addiction, dementia and neurodegeneration1. We are investing billions of pounds.”

York University has also received funding to contribute to three other PRUs in public health.dementia and neurodegeneration, and mental health.
