New Mexico's top veterinarian is warning dog owners to be careful as a mysterious and potentially deadly disease continues to infect dogs across the country.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico's top veterinarian is warning dog owners to be careful as a mysterious and potentially deadly disease continues to infect dogs across the country.
The disease reportedly begins with a persistent cough that can last for several weeks, after which the dog becomes lethargic and refuses to eat. These are just the first symptoms.
“There are many different types of canine respiratory diseases, most of which can be treated or prevented with vaccines,” says Dr. Samantha Uhrig, state veterinarian for the New Mexico Livestock Commission. “And this individual, for some reason, doesn't respond well to treatment.”
Because antibiotics don't work, veterinarians and researchers at Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences believe it's a virus, but little is known about it at this point.
“Tests are currently being conducted to determine the cause, but we do not know the cause at this time,” Uhrig said.
The disease has been reported in 14 states in the United States, including Colorado. Because it hit so close to home, Uhrig said it was only a matter of time before it was found in New Mexico.
“We're certainly seeing neighboring states in this situation, and it certainly puts New Mexico at risk,” Uehrig said. “At this time, there are no confirmed cases and we rely on practicing veterinarians to report cases.”
Because there are so many unknowns, a dog can be determined to have the virus if it tests negative for other known respiratory illnesses.
With many people planning to travel for the holidays, the disease could find new ways to spread from dog to dog.
“If you're boarding your dog or taking it somewhere, it's very important that it's vaccinated at least two weeks before it's likely to come into contact with other dogs,” says Uhrig. said.
Again, although no cases have been reported in New Mexico yet, dog owners should keep a close eye on their pets. If your dog won't stop coughing, take him to your veterinarian for a check-up.
