Navigating holiday stress: U.Va. experts provide tips for a joyful, conflict-free family gathering

Holidays are a time of celebration and joy, but they are often accompanied by increased stress levels. Although spending time with family is important, it can sometimes cause anxiety and tension.

As we approach the holiday season, the University of Virginia Health System is stepping up support for individuals and families dealing with the inevitable stress that comes with festive gatherings.

Recognizing these common challenges, Dr. Claudia Allen and Dr. Joseph Tan of U.Va Health. Family stress clinic We discussed ways to defuse potential conflicts and promote harmonious interactions.

“Don’t beat yourself up for feeling anything other than joy. It’s just a human experience,” Allen said.

Allen said she knows her family isn’t perfect. Therefore, she recommended limiting the time they spend together.

“Don’t expect to be together 24/7,” Allen told WTOP.

For example, when going out of town to visit relatives, say, “Instead of going for seven days, maybe you’ll go for three days. Keep it short and sweet.”

“Sometimes we think a happy family is one where everyone is together, but sometimes it’s fun to mix it up,” she added.

Ms. Allen even suggested doing pre-planned activities to avoid stand-up and uncomfortable conversations.

“Spending more time with your family only increases the chances of conflict,” Tan said.

Tan said that while reaching for alcoholic beverages may sound appealing, “alcohol weakens inhibitions and impairs judgment,” making it useful when trying to resolve family conflicts. He said there is a possibility not.

Instead, they recommended going out for activities that don’t revolve around eating and drinking.

“I think it’s OK to have a ‘last call,’ even if you’re hosting something at home, and bars do that,” he said.

At the end of the day, Tan and Allen told them to feel their feelings and not judge themselves too harshly during this stressful time.
