January 5 — Staten Island, NY — NAMI, the Staten Island chapter of the National Psychiatric Alliance, will host a series of events in the coming weeks. Each is designed to help participants overcome any struggles they may face.
Formed in 1979, the National Alliance on Mental Illness prides itself on being “the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization.” According to their website, they have an alliance of more than 600 local affiliates and 49 national organizations. We want to provide
One such affiliate is here on the island. A local group known as NAMI-NYC Staten Island began in 1985 and was registered as a 501 C3 charity in 1986. Today, the organization continues to serve and host free events to support and educate the community.
Recently, they announced a series of events to further their mission.
One such event is Wednesday’s NAMI NYC Staten Island Community Education Conference. January 11, 7:00 PM The free event will be held at the University of Richmond Medical Center, RUMC, and SIPP Auditorium. Guest speaker will be Steven Homley, a Social He worker from the Department of Veterans Affairs Port of New York Suicide Prevention Program.
The VA NY Harbor Suicide Prevention Team has been around for 15 years and continues to work to expand its suicide prevention efforts. We are stepping up our efforts and looking for interventions at the societal level. This conference wants to do just that.
The New York National Guard, in partnership with NAMI NYC Staten Island, hosts the New York State Citizens Reserve Corps Training Program. As the threat of severe weather increases, so does the need for emergency preparedness. As stated in the flyer, “The NY Citizen Preparedness Training Program ensures that it has the tools and resources to prepare for and respond to disasters of all kinds and to restore pre-disaster conditions as quickly as possible. We teach residents.” This introductory program advises participants on how to properly respond to disasters of all kinds. Whether it’s developing a family emergency plan or securing a stockpile of emergency supplies.
The event will be held on January 18th at 3:00 pm at the Church of the Holy Family at 366 Watchogue Rd. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and is limited to 500 people. Please try to arrive early.
The last event is the 1st “NAMI parent-child classroom”. This free 8-session program is specifically designed for friends, family and loved ones who are battling mental illness. According to the flyer, “Studies show that the program significantly improved coping and problem-solving skills in those closest to people with mental illness.”
