NAFDAC alerts public on sale of counterfeit TANDAK injection in Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning regarding the sale of counterfeit TANDAK injection 1.5g powder and water for injection manufactured by Intracin Pharmaceuticals PVT. LTD located in Gujarat, India.

The discovery of this product in Gombe State, Nigeria, was reported to the authorities by the Marketing Authorization Holder (MAH), Marcson Healthcare Ltd.

TANDAK® Injection, a 1.5g powder, is an important co-formulation of ceftriaxone 1000mg and sulbactam 500mg prescribed for the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections. Its effectiveness depends on the supervision of a medical professional to ensure proper administration and monitoring.

According to NAFDAC, the illegal distribution of counterfeit medicines poses a serious health risk to consumers as these products do not comply with regulatory standards and are compromised in safety, quality and efficacy.

NAFDAC reaction

Following this discovery, NAFDAC directed all zonal directors and state coordinators to carry out surveillance and eliminate counterfeit products from their respective zones and states.

  • Importers, distributors, retailers, health professionals and carers are required to exercise caution and vigilance to prevent the import, distribution, sale and use of counterfeit products within their supply chains.
  • Medical products must be sourced only from certified and licensed suppliers and thoroughly tested for authenticity and physical condition.
