Mustakeem to lecture on medicine, Black history at three universities – The Source

Sowande MustachemAssociate Professor of History and African and African American Studies at Washington University in St. Louis, author of award-winning 2016 book Slavery at Sea: Terror, Sex, and Sickness in the Sea, both in arts and sciences “This section explains. Middle Passage” at his three universities in the spring semester.

upon February 23rd, Mustakeem gives a pair of lectures at the University of Cincinnati. The university’s medical school has selected “Slavery at Sea” as its “Un-Common Read” for Black History Month in 2023. Mustakeem discussed the book for the History Department, and the latter was co-hosted as part of the Lunch and Learning Discussion. By Academic Libraries’ Racial Equality Support & Programming to Educate Community Teams (RESPECT) and the Donald C. Harrison Health and Science Library.

upon March 8Mustakim will be lecturing at the University of North Carolina’s Black Culture and History at the Sonya Haynes Stone Center in Chapel Hill.Held a talk in conjunction with the exhibition “If I die…I will fight until I die! ~Rebellion and resistance of the slave ship~” — an exhibit partially inspired by Mustachem’s book. The exhibition runs through his April 30th at the Robert and Sally Brown Gallery and Museum at the Stone Center.

upon May 15th, Mustakeem discusses “Slavery at Sea and the Future of Medical Education” for the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. This talk is co-hosted by the University’s Center for Health and Humanities in Groningen and its Historical Research Center as part of the webinar series “History of Medicine and Health”.
