Music Therapy: Healing the Body and Mind in Loudoun County
This is the story of finding the right key to unlock new ways of healing and recovery.
On today's episode of “Matt About Town,” WTOP's Matt Kaufax travels to Loudoun County, Virginia, to learn more about a new medical technology: music therapy.
Eight years ago, doctors at Inova Loudoun Hospital in Leesburg were the first in the state to study how music could help intensive care unit patients. These patients had all kinds of illnesses, from cancer to neurological disorders.
Hospital staff told Matt they were shocked by the results and are now trying to spread the word about the potential benefits of music during the recovery process.
Whether it's helping a Parkinson's patient walk or calming a cancer patient before undergoing radiation therapy, the nurses and therapists Matt spoke to believe there is now data to support how effective it is. He said that he was attacked.
