Kalokane had been under the facility’s care since he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020 and had been admitted to psychiatric hospitals four times in less than two years.

In June 2023, the attacker stabbed to death Nottingham University students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley Kumar, both aged 19, and the school caretaker Ian Coates, 65.

The investigation revealed that prior to the stabbing incident, Kalokane had frequently stopped taking his medication and had become increasingly violent.

Contacted by the BBC, her mother said: “Looking at this case [Calocane] The similarities are so striking that it makes me feel very anxious and worried about my son.

“His mental health was deteriorating even before COVID. He had attempted suicide before and was becoming increasingly violent.”

“My son was on a Community Treatment Order (CTO), which meant a nurse came to our house once a month to give him his medication, but my son wouldn’t let the nurse in because he didn’t believe he was ill.

“There was an unopened box of pills in his apartment. There was no supervision.”

“We have complained to the trust about the lack of care and support but have been told he is over 18 and our interference is unwelcome, leaving us feeling helpless.”
