Mother demands answers after medication mix-up at Walgreens | Health

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Mid-South mother is demanding answers after a medication mix-up left her toddler with the wrong medication.

The woman said her son was prescribed antihistamines, but the pharmacy gave him drugs to lower his blood sugar levels.

Trinity Holmes said she went to the Walgreens on Hux Cross Road to pick up prescriptions for her two children. Olive branch, miss.

She said she didn’t realize she had been given the wrong medication until her 2-year-old child had already put the medication in his mouth.

“I was wondering why a two-year-old would take pills, so I investigated and was able to get them out of his mouth,” Holmes said. “The pill was meant to treat patients with type 2” diabetes. “

The medicine bottle given to her had her son’s name on it. But she said the drug was glyburide, an anti-diabetic drug used to lower blood sugar levels.

“It was very scary,” Holmes said. “When we looked at the side effects, we found that he may have been in a coma or worse.”

Erin Meeks, manager of BMG Wolf River Pharmacy, who was not involved in the incident, said all pharmacies conduct safety checks to minimize the possibility of mistakes, but mistakes do happen. He said he would get it.

“Unfortunately, mistakes do happen, and their incidence will be higher as demand for prescriptions increases, more vaccines are needed, and more metrics are needed. and compensate for the reduced work hours of pharmacists,” Meeks said.

A Walgreens spokesperson could not comment specifically on Holmes’ situation due to patient confidentiality, but said the team investigates any prescription errors and takes them very seriously. Stated.
