The 2019 incident sparked a debate over parents’ right to control health care.
PORTLAND, Ore. — A Clackamas County judge has sentenced a mother to 90 days in jail for denying her established medical care and interfering with her daughter’s care. Prosecutors claim Christina Dixon, 39, tried to treat her daughter’s liver cancer with CBD oil.
In November, a jury found Dixon guilty of custodial interference and criminal abuse for refusing doctors’ orders and interfering with medical treatment.
The case sparked a debate over parents’ rights to control medical care. In 2020, Dixon told KGW she didn’t believe chemotherapy was helping her then-13-year-old daughter, Kylie. Instead, the Wilsonville mother treated Kylie’s cancer at her home using alternative treatments such as vitamins, herbs and CBD oil.
The incident caused an uproar in the alternative medicine community. CBD may, but relieve some symptoms Although it can help relieve cancer symptoms, such as reducing nausea and pain, the substance cannot actually treat or control the disease.
Doctors wanted to remove the cancerous tumor. Instead, prosecutors allege, Dixon ignored a state order to bring her daughter in for treatment and fled to Las Vegas, where the FBI tracked them down.
Kylie was placed in state custody and underwent surgery in 2020.
“She had surgery and is now cancer-free,” Kylie’s father, Jim Dixon, explained.
Mr Dixon said he felt a harsher sentence should have been handed down to his ex-wife Christina.
“It was a little sad to see her overcome all of this so easily, considering all the damage she’s done,” Dixon said.
