Meat shortage and CHK policy pose challenges for Crown Heights restaurants
by CrownHeights.info
For Crown Heights eateries, it’s a difficult question with no good answer: stop serving meat or start serving shichitas other than Lubavitch.
With CHK’s sudden withdrawal from Agri’s Shoal Harbor brand of meat, Pesach’s fears of a meat shortage were well-founded. Private beef operations in Solomons, Nebraska, brought relief to Crown Heights and Lubavitch consumers who only eat CHK meat, but only for beef.
Another shortage of meat and poultry cannot be avoided in time, with some Crown Heights eateries, including restaurants and takeout, already running out of stock.
One food facility told CrownHeights.info on condition of anonymity that even though it was the only Lubavitch meat available that met the criteria, the Shoal Harbor meat was sold under Ramed K. Heckscher in his store. He pointed out that CHK issued him a warning if he used meat. their needs.
This requirement put certain restaurants in a bind. Please stop selling these meats in bulk or start selling meat other than Lubavitch Shichita.
CrownHeights.info has confirmed that meat other than Lubavitch shichita is now being sold by at least one CHK facility that previously only sold Lubavitch shichita.
CrownHeights.info advises those in the Crown Heights community who only eat Lubavitch shichita to make sure the meat they purchase meets their standards.
