Morrisville, Vt. (WCAX) – Health officials are confirming cases of measles in Vermont.

The Vermont Department of Health says a school-age child in Lamoille County has been diagnosed with the virus.

They say the child got sick after traveling internationally with his family.

Health officials say the risk to the public is low as children are mostly isolated. But they were in the emergency room at Copley Hospital on Sunday night. The hospital has contacted known visitors to the ER during that time. They are asking those who were in the Copley emergency department in Morrisville on Sunday, March 9th from 3:15pm to 6pm to follow the instructions listed on their website..

This was the first case of measles in Vermont in 2025, two cases in 2024, one in 2011, and one in 2018.

Officials say the incident has nothing to do with three ongoing outbreaks of measles in the United States or the current outbreak of measles in Quebec.

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory virus that can cause serious illness. Health officials are urging Vermonters to ensure that families get vaccinated from measles, particularly children. Click here for more information about measles and symptoms.
