Mass. officials urge awareness of mental health hotlines to call during the holidays

On Wednesday, state officials and social services advocates called attention to multiple state and federal resources surrounding mental health and domestic violence as the holidays approached.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan urged anyone experiencing mental health problems or suicidal thoughts to dial 988 to call the new National Mental Health Hotline. .

Suicide “is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States, and one of the tragedies is that help is out there,” she said.

The holidays are also a dangerous time for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, said Stephanie Brown, CEO of Casa Myrna, Boston’s domestic violence program.

“When family and friends get together, they must agree to protect each other from sexual assault, from unwanted kisses and hugs at family parties to drinking at holiday gatherings,” says Brown. said in a briefing. Wednesday.

“Let’s reach out and stay connected,” Brown said. “Tell them that you care about them, that it’s not their fault, you’re there for them.”

Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey expressed a similar opinion.

“There are many challenges in our lives, but vacations make stress and anxiety even more complicated,” he said. “Give yourself the help and support you need to stay safe this season.”
