Annapolis, Md. (AP) — Maryland officials and advocates highlight a state program that allows residents to start getting health insurance by checking a box on their state tax returns doing.

Maryland became the first U.S. state to establish a tax-based easy admissions program in 2019.

State income tax forms ask filers whether they have health insurance. If not, you may agree to let the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange know that you may be eligible for low-cost or free health insurance.

The exchange, the state agency that manages the state’s online health insurance marketplace, Maryland Health Connection, will follow up with information on how to enroll.

Following Maryland, nine other states have launched similar programs.

In Maryland, more than 100,000 state residents check a box on their tax forms to find out more, and more than 10,000 have health insurance.

Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen is introducing legislation to allow people to purchase health insurance when filing their federal tax returns.
