Los Ferris (KABC) — On Monday, Los Angeles City Councilman Nithya Raman took a ride with Healthcare in Action. A non-profit organization that provides mobile healthcare to people experiencing homelessness.
Raman’s office gave the nonprofit a $5,000 grant earlier this year.
“I think as a council district, this is a way we’re trying to fill some of the gaps we see, especially from health and mental health services in Los Angeles County,” Raman said.
Healthcare in Action uses fully equipped vans to deliver medical services, so physician assistants and social workers can meet patients where they are.
Robert Finch, Physician Assistant at Healthcare in Action, said:
More than 15,000 people experiencing homelessness in LA County suffer from serious mental illness, according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.
Michael Hochman, CEO of Healthcare in Action, says mental illness is just as urgent to tackle as any other healthcare issue.
“One of our hidden motivations for doing this work is to gain trust and stabilize patients through healthcare,” Hochman said.
