Local expert weighs in on pros, cons

Dayton, Ohio (WDTN) – With the warm weather here, many people may be deciding whether to move their exercise habits outdoors.

A local physical therapist is considering whether it’s better to run outside or on a treadmill.

“There are pros and cons to both,” says Aaron Single, a physical therapist at Kettering Health Sports Medicine in Tipp City.

Single said there are many benefits to running outside. First, you can control your pace throughout the run. You’ll also be spending more time outdoors.

“We know that just exercising and being outside reduces the incidence of depression and improves overall mental health,” Single said.

Single said running on a treadmill also has benefits, such as increased shock absorption.

“If you’re just coming back from an injury, the shock absorption of a treadmill may make it a little easier on your body than just running on the sidewalk,” Single says.

Single said one drawback of the treadmill is that it doesn’t work as many muscle groups as running outdoors.

“I think it’s because of the uneven terrain, especially the lower leg muscles,” Single says.

However, choosing to run on a treadmill indoors provides a controlled environment and protects you from the elements and other risks.

“When you run outside, you have to contend with other factors, such as other people, animals, and cars,” Single says.

If you’re training for an outdoor race like a marathon or 5K, Single says there’s no substitute for training outdoors. However, if training on a treadmill fits better into your daily routine, go for it.

Single said it ultimately comes down to personal preference.

“It depends on the person,” Single said. “There are pros and cons to both. My recommendation is to try both if possible and see which one you like better.”
