san antonio – A local boxing gym that was a positive and safe place for teens faces an uncertain future as its landlord threatens to shut it down.
This is a small boxing gym on the city’s West Side, previously located on Colorado Street, but relocated in search of more space. The gym was a place for instruction, a place for physical fitness, and a place to protect children from trouble.
Gym owner Juan Cardona said the move came with some unexpected complications. A boxing gym is currently facing serious threats as a man claiming to be the owner of the building is demanding the gym be evicted.
“This guy came out of nowhere and said he was the real owner and the original guy should never have sublet. Now he wants us out of here in a week. “I’m saying,” Cardona said.
Cardona said he signed a two-year lease that will allow him to occupy the building until December 2024.
He said the potential closure of boxing gyms would not only affect members but the wider community.
While the legality of the situation is being vindicated, the owners hope their landlords will give them more than a few days to close their doors.
Cardona said he has records proving the former landlord was allowed to sublet the building, and proof that the tenant is paying rent.
For now, Cardona’s boxing gym has until Thursday to vacate its premises and has nowhere else to go.
We are closely following the details of this case and will keep you informed of any developments.
