A huge Egyptian-themed temporary film set has been erected above the Les Mills International car park in Auckland.
Philip Mills, managing director of the global fitness business, said the multi-level stage structure is a movie set used to showcase the company’s BodyCombat classes, which are shown to millions of people online. said.
BodyCombat is a high-energy martial arts-inspired workout based in part on Taekwondo and Kung Fu.
“These films are used by 100,000 instructors in 22,000 gyms around the world,” he said, referring to Europe, North America, South America and Asia.
“We are in 120 countries,” he said.
The interior of Les Mills Auckland City will also be used in the production of the new film. Mills said a special set will be built for the task.
Peter Klein of New York designed the sets in collaboration with Oakland-based set designer and art director Studio RA. Steve Baker’s Bakery Collective worked with both companies to coordinate set construction and filming.
“We film quarterly classes, and this time includes BodyCombat’s 100th release. We have 100 of the world’s best instructors in the city to film this class. They… “We’re going to be on this huge stage,” said Philip Mills.
These 100 instructors sprint up the stairs and instruct about 200 people who are stationed on each floor of the set and follow on either side of the parking lot.
“About 200 people will be attending classes on the ground floor on both sides of the Wellesley Street building,” Mills said.
The car park was also used as a movie set during COVID-19 and proved to be a huge success. Mills said people were surprised to see so many members working out together, at a special distance, while much of the rest of the country was “locked indoors.”
Films being made here this month won’t be released to the world until September, when they are screened at the gym.
Les Mills International produces BodyCombat films on a quarterly basis, making this the third domestic and fourth international production.
BodyCombat films have been in production for the past four years and have grown “internationally. With more cameras and instructors, the concept has expanded. Films produced by Les Mills are licensed to that company, but , which are sold to other gyms around the world, and the company collects royalties from those client gyms. We train teachers and deliver classes online, including BodyPump and BodyCombat. You can watch it at home.”

Jack Phillips, director of communications and content for Les Mills International, said today that Body Combat is the most popular martial arts-based training in the world, invented by the company 25 years ago.
“We’ve been able to constantly reinvent ourselves, ensure we’re responsive to changing trends and attract new audiences,” the London-based executive said.
BodyCombat virtual reality was launched in the past two years, he said.
“BodyCombat VR has become the most popular and best-selling virtual reality fitness game in the world,” he said.
Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated BodyCombat virtual reality to celebrities last year.
Phillips said virtual reality fans tend to spend a lot of time playing internet games, but added: “We found out through the game that we could almost secretly stimulate their fitness levels, so they join the gym. People can now enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle,” he said.
BodyCombat empowers both physically and mentally, Phillips said, and its Oakland-based program directors are Dan Cohen and Rachel Newsham.
