LAUSD works with community groups and local businesses to teach students the importance of nutrition.
The new “Food as Medicine” program is part of a multi-year partnership between Anthem Blue Cross, I-Heart media, Food Forward, Common Threads, Chicas Verdes and LA Sparks to combat food insecurity and Improve community health.
The program is available in four states: California, Indianapolis, Georgia and New York.
Students on Tuesday at Manual Arts High School in South Los Angeles received bags of donated fresh produce and learned how to cook healthy meals for their families.
Some teenagers say that there are many fast food restaurants in their neighborhood, and that poor quality food has led to sickness in their families.
“My grandpa has health problems because he doesn’t eat well,” said the 16-year-old Australian pastor.
“One of my family members also has diabetes and had to eat better….but it’s hard to find healthier food where we live,” Kaylin says. Added Martinez.
