L.A. County health survey finds Black, Latinx, Asian residents face inequities in health care, housing, insurance

Los Angeles County Department of Health announced the results The 2023 Health Survey found that non-white residents face a wide range of inequalities.

The study involved 9,372 adults and 7,391 children in Los Angeles County and examined a variety of factors, including access to health care, housing, and insurance, and how they impact physical and mental health. We investigated.


Studies show that Black and Latino residents in the county are more likely to have health problems related to diabetes and high blood pressure. Rates of both health conditions have increased sharply since 1997.

“The findings of the 2023 Los Angeles County Health Survey remind us of the harsh reality of how historical inequalities continue to shape health and well-being in our communities, especially among Black and Latino populations. We’re facing this,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of public health.

Rates of high blood pressure and diabetes among Blacks and Latinos have nearly doubled over the past 27 years.

“We found that Latinos and Blacks are diagnosed with diabetes at significantly higher rates than Asians and whites,” said Dipa Shah Patel, Los Angeles County Nutrition and Physical Activity Program Director. .

When it comes to housing in Los Angeles County, Latinos report having the highest housing affordability rates, with African Americans slightly behind. Both minority groups reported facing more shelter problems than Asian and White adults. The study found similar results regarding food insecurity.

The study also found that while Asian adults fared better than other ethnic minorities on certain dimensions, there are still areas where Asians lag behind.

U.S.-born Asian adults reported higher levels of loneliness and prevalence of suicidal ideation than any other ethnicity or race.

The last survey by the Ministry of Health was conducted five years ago.
