ORG Imagine having to learn to walk or tie your shoelaces again. Imagine facing that reality as a child. KMBC NINE cares about kids, and Ability KC is working with them to help them thrive in therapy. KMBC NINE’s Teresa White joins us live to show how the nonprofit is making a difference. Teresa. One of the best things about Ability KC is that they provide individualized therapy to thousands of kids every year. And it’s all provided under one roof. That’s one of the reasons Ability KC is working with them to help them thrive in therapy. Sounds good. Throwing a baseball may seem like a normal activity for most kids, but it’s a big step for Hunter. On the first day of third grade, Hunter’s life changed forever. He was playing outside with his friends. He was in an after-school program when he suffered a stroke. That moment marked the beginning of a long, hard fight. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and the financial burden that comes with it all.Hunter is doing well in his job search and the doctor at Children’s Mercy recommended Ability Casey as they are the best place to work with brain injury champions. Hunter has been working with Ability Casey for a little over two years and has regained most of his motor skills and some of his cognitive function. He was in a wheelchair before and now he can stand and do his daily activities. He basically started at baby level and had to work his way up to where he is now. We are working on getting more fine motor skills. His right arm had very limited movement. His shoulder moved some but he had very little grip strength and couldn’t hold anything. Each time he comes back we slowly made progress and improved his movement and function. Well, overall he has become so much more confident over the last few years. It’s really exciting to see him. Ability Casey is the only all-in-one rehabilitation service in the metro that offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychological therapy, aquatic therapy and vision therapy. That’s why Hunter is making so much progress. It’s amazing. But we need the support of the community to keep going. Unfortunately, sometimes insurance doesn’t pay for the treatment we need, but we have our limits. If insurance doesn’t pay for the treatment and it’s really necessary treatment, Hunter’s a nice catch. His goal is clear, he wants to get back to playing baseball. My hand wasn’t open, but now I can open it. Reporting from Kansas City, Darius White, KMBC Nine News It’s a pretty amazing ability. Casey offers everything from aquatic therapy and music therapy to group sessions. They help a lot of kids in our community. So we’re asking for your help to help support them.
