‘King of burpees’ army major breaks records with exercise invented to test soldiers

Major Tommy Vu is the king of burpees!

The 37-year-old from Salem, Oregon, US, has broken a series of world records with his favorite exercise.

Burpees were invented as a way to test the fitness levels of young military recruits, and Tommy’s record-breaking is an homage to that.

Tommy, a major in the Oregon Army National Guard, set out on his world record journey in March 2023 and hasn’t stopped since.

The first thing he did was Performed the most burpees from chest to ground in 1 hour (male) The total is 1,002. After losing the title, he regained it in October 2024 with 1,027.

Tommy is a private physician assistant in sports medicine orthopedics and has shared his passion for burpees on television.

He took on this special challenge to bring awareness to Team RWB, an organization that helps enrich veterans and the veteran community.

As part of the effort, he donated $1 for every burpee pull-up he performed to Team RWB.

The endeavor was also special because Tommy did it to celebrate his son Liam’s birthday.

He said he wanted to break the record to remind his sons that “if you set your mind on fire, nothing is impossible.”

In January 2024, Tommy achieved the following record: Fastest time to complete 25 burpees (male) In just 33.34 seconds.

This endeavor was also meant to be inspirational.

“I broke it in front of my troops and helped inspire them to keep their New Year’s resolutions,” he said.

Tommy briefly distanced himself from Burpee and won the title. Most chest-to-ground push-ups in 1 hour (male) By April 2024, the total will be 1,494.

And returning to the burpees of his recent record attempt, he did the following: Achieved the most chest-to-ground push-up burpees in 1 hour (male) – 1,068.

Tommy dedicated the record to his best friend Ilsa, who was battling brain cancer.

Despite describing many of his record-breaking adventures as “extremely painful,” Tommy isn’t done yet.

He said: “In the future, I would like to see more burpee styles and different burpee world records.

“I think I can break some records myself. And you guys go out there for yourselves and beat my world record.”
