Jane Fonda’s Fitness Routine Is ‘Everything I Used to Do, Just Slower’ (Exclusive)

Jane Fonda’s fitness routine hasn’t changed over the years, only her pace has changed over time.

“I’m basically doing everything I used to do slowly,” the 87-year-old actress tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.

“I used to be a runner, but now I love walking. I love spending time outdoors in the woods, especially up and down hills,” she continues.

For Fonda, it’s important to combine methods to stay in peak physical condition, so you don’t get used to the same routine.

“I work out every day, so it’s important to mix up my movements. I alternate between upper and lower body workouts each day for strength. I also find ways to incorporate cardio. “Walking outside is one of my favorite ways to do that,” she says.

“I never expected my video to become such a phenomenon,” Fonda told PEOPLE, reflecting on the impact of the popular tape, which spawned even more exercise videos in the years that followed.

“When I started my career, there wasn’t a lot of intense exercise available to women,” she continues. “I received my basic training in the 70s from a charismatic teacher named Leni Kasden.”

“After the video came out, I received amazing letters from all over the world. One of them was from a young woman who was in the Peace Corps in Guatemala and was doing exercises in a mud hut.” Fonda added. “Another woman said she looked in the mirror while brushing her teeth and noticed that she had new muscles in her arms. She wrote that it made her feel empowered and that day , she goes to work for the first time and confronts her kind boss.” ”

Fonda is currently working on: supernaturalavailable exclusively on virtual reality (VR) fitness and wellness platforms meta questa four-part content series.

Each VR fitness class (Flow with Jane Fonda, Box with Jane Fonda & Ludacris, Jane Fonda: Stringing, Jane Fonda: Team Workout) is taught by Fonda herself and combines Supernatural’s signature boxing and flow experiences. It’s a thing.

“Going from VHS to VR, I was surprised at how easy it was to get ‘Supernatural,’” Fonda tells PEOPLE. “We bridged the past and future of fitness with this series. It felt like no time had passed, minus the technology.”

One of Fonda’s favorite content series is the use of music. “Listening to the right music can make or break your training results, especially when it comes to cardio and aerobics,” she explains. “An upbeat playlist is essential. And a good attitude is important.”

“Fitness is such a huge part of my life, so to be able to do it with today’s technology is really a full-circle moment,” the activist added.
