IU opens Irsay Institute to address mental health stigma

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana — Indiana University opened a new research institute on Thursday to address the stigma surrounding mental health, according to Indiana University.

The Irsay Institute’s mission is to be “the leading national center to address stigma around mental illness and health issues such as HIV, epilepsy, cancer, dementia and addiction”.


“The groundbreaking research being conducted at the Irsay Institute will enable IU to strengthen interdisciplinary research that addresses stigma and other major health issues, while consolidating impactful campus-wide efforts into one. “We are grateful to the Irsay family for their generous donations and commitments to ensure that IU researchers are ready to face these pressing issues.” I have.”

With more than 20 social medicine scientists, Irsay Institue researchers also aim to address issues such as substance abuse disorders, sexuality and reproduction, healthcare systems, global health, and climate impacts on health. The business was made possible by his $3 million donation from the Jim Irsay family.

Given that Jim Irsay is the primary owner of the Colts, the Irsay Institute is linked to advancing the goals of the Colts’ Kicking the Stigma initiative. The Kicking the Stigma initiative is, as IU put it in a press release, “an effort to raise mental awareness and remove stigma associated with mental disorders.”

“When we decided to launch Kicking the Stigma to address the mental health crisis in our state and nation, we knew that some of the best research in America was already being done here at Indiana University. I knew it right away: Indianapolis Colts, Karen Jackson, President of the Arsay Family.

In addition to Kicking the Stigma, the Irsay Institute partners with national organizations Project Healthy Minds, Huntsman Mental Health Institute, Bring Change to Mind, and the World Psychiatric Association’s Together Against Stigma program.
