Singapore:
An Indian student at a sports school in Singapore died after falling ill after a fitness trial last week. The school announced it was launching a detailed investigation into the 14-year-old student’s death.
Channel News Asia reported that Pranav Mahaik felt unwell after the 400m fitness time trial on October 5. He added that he was part of the intermediate team.
Pranav was taken to National University Hospital, where he died. The cremation service was held Wednesday night.
“We have launched a detailed investigation into the incident, thoroughly reviewed our safety protocols and will continue to keep parents updated,” CNA quoted Singapore Sports School in a statement on Wednesday.
“Due to the ongoing investigation, we are unable to release any further details at this time. We ask for the public’s understanding in order to protect the family’s privacy during this time of grief,” the school said in a statement.
The school said it was “deeply saddened” by Pranav’s death and expressed its condolences to his family. It further added that Mr. Pranav was an exemplary student, an excellent athlete in badminton and possessed an exemplary personality. “He was bright and pleasant and always had a positive attitude towards training and studying.”
“He was a promising youth athlete who won several national age-group competitions and was well-liked by his peers, teachers and coaches.” The school has extended its support to Pranav’s family. He said he would continue.
“Our school counselors and staff have also been providing support to student-athletes, coaches, and staff affected by this difficult time,” the school said, adding that the continued health of our students remains our top priority. .
According to an obituary posted on the school’s Facebook page, the Singaporean student’s parents were Prem Singh Mahaik and Rita Mahaik. He also had two brothers Pratyush Madaik and Prakrit Madaik.
Pranav’s uncle Raj Verma said the boy’s parents were informed about the incident while the ambulance was on its way to the hospital.
“When doctors examined her, most of her organs were already not functioning,” CNA quoted Verma as saying.
The boy underwent bypass surgery and also had surgery on his foot, his uncle said.
“And (this) morning, they said, ‘Okay, he’s gone,'” Raj Verma said, adding that the family is demanding answers from the school about the incident.
“SBA is providing assistance and support to the family as they prepare to send Pranav off,” said SBA CEO Alan Ow.
