Peacock said there are many ways to take the plunge and brave the cold, including walking and exercising outdoors in the winter and switching to cold water at the end of your shower.

“Why not take a few seconds of cold water at the end of your shower to calm yourself down?” she suggested. “Now I wait a minute or two and then switch to warm water.”

Another way to try hot and cold therapy is to soak in a sauna for 5 to 15 minutes, then jump into cold water to “boost your recovery.”

“If you repeat this a few times, your body will learn to adapt and you will get used to it,” she added.
