Just in time for the harsher winter season, San Diego’s Dr. Azadeh Shirazi revealed the five supplements he most often recommends to keep the epidermis healthy.

vitamin D

This vitamin also compensates for the need for excess sunlight, which is harmful to the skin and can cause cancer, multiplying its benefits. This becomes especially important as we age, Dr. Shirai emphasized.

“As we age, our skin becomes less efficient at producing vitamin D from sunlight, and our kidneys’ ability to convert vitamin D to its active form also decreases,” says Shirazi, who explains that readily available supplements can improve vitamin D levels. It added that intake could be reduced. Certain women are also at risk for melanoma.

resveratrol

Naturally found in fruits and legumes, this plant compound “helps brighten skin tone and increase elasticity,” and doubles as an antioxidant.

It is also effective in anti-aging.

vitamin E

Vitamin E is known to increase bone strength and prevent bone loss in menopausal women.

“Our bones form the scaffolding that supports our skin,” Shirazi says.

She recommends it’s especially important for women in their 40s and 50s, as decreased estrogen leads to bone loss.

nicotinamide

Shirazi takes two 500mg supplements of nicotinamide, a type of vitamin B3.

That’s because “it helps improve the skin’s barrier function by increasing ceramides, the glue that binds skin cells together, and strengthening the skin barrier,” Shirazi said.

Nicotinamide acts as a powerful antioxidant and also prevents inflammatory skin problems.

According to the dermatologist, “nicotinamide helps the skin replenish the body’s DNA repair enzymes,” which is particularly effective against sun damage.

Simple vitamins play a role in keeping the epidermis healthy.

multivitamin

In addition to D and E supplements, Siraj has been taking a women’s multivitamin for 20 years.

Her product of choice also contains zinc, a periodic element that “has many anti-inflammatory properties and therefore improves many skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, and eczema.”

This multivitamin also contains vitamin A, which “helps improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and boost hyaluronic acid levels.”

This vitamin “also helps with acne by increasing cell turnover, reducing collagen breakdown, evening skin tone, and regulating sebum production.”
