Meridian, Idaho — From blood pressure screenings to hearing and vision tests, there’s so much you need to do to stay healthy. The costs of these services can add up.
for that reason, Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) Hosted the 3rd Annual community health fair At Meridian to provide free medical services to Treasure Valley.
Olivia Paulsen, ICOM SGA Community Outreach Chair, said:
ICOM is Idaho’s first medical school. The health fair also provided training opportunities for the next generation of doctors through hands-on experience.
“Our focus is on reaching out to underserved rural communities. Many of these individuals do not have access to care,” Poulsen said. It’s an opportunity to receive free basic health care services.”
The event offered services and resources including CPR training, hearing and vision screening, osteopathic manual therapy (OMT), and mammography.
Medical students were stationed at stations throughout ICOM’s campus to provide services.
“When people come in, real people with real problems come in, and we can talk to them, find out what they’re going through, and go through it with them. It was great to see it,” said Dallas Petrov, an ICOM medical student.
More than 100 people used the free service on Saturday. This year’s Community Health Fair had the highest attendance at the event.
“Medical students are hungry for exposure, so this is a win-win situation,” said Ethan Rowe, an ICOM medical student. “It’s really nice to be able to go out and apply what you’ve learned in the classroom.”
The ICOM Student Organization also supported the event with activities and patient education.
“It’s great to be able to do the vitals measurements, physical exams, and osteopathic manipulative treatments that we’re doing at this station,” said medical student Jenny Scheffel. , because it really helps me gain experience that I will put into practice for the rest of my career.”
