Edith Eagle, a 47-year-old stepmother of four, bought the $32 self-tanning nasal spray known as “Barbie Drug” that went viral on TikTok in hopes of securing a luxurious shade. In April 2023, he was rushed to the hospital after inhaling. Ahead of her family trip to the Canary Islands.

“I could have died that day,” Eagle, a British chef and wedding venue owner, told Kennedy News & Media. “I will never buy anything like this again, especially from the internet.”

In search of a fake glow, Gen Xers bought a bottle of Melanotan, a bronze booster.

It is a largely illegal drug and has been touted online as an alternative to fake tanning in the wake of the always-talked-about ‘Barbiecore’ craze, with wannabe pin-ups now having rhinoplasty and ‘Barbie-nosed’ rhinoplasty. People who use Melanotan to improve their appearance are reportedly at increased risk of developing skin cancer, kidney disease, and erectile dysfunction.

But Eagle, who was reportedly encouraged by his stepdaughter Kayla Fox to try tanning alternatives, was unaware of the life-threatening danger he was facing.

“Kayla recommended nasal spray tanning as a quick way to get a tan,” Eagle said. “I get sunburned easily on vacation anyway, so I was planning on going to Fuerteventura.” [in the Canary Islands].

“So I Googled it, saw it pop up online, and ordered it,” she continued. “I like getting tanned because I prefer not to wear makeup. I’ve always liked looking tanned and fresh.”

Eagle was initially pleased with how well the DIY darkener worked.

“The first day, we were so brown. I’ve never experienced anything like this before,” the brunette gushed. “I got a really bad sunburn in one day.”

And while it certainly felt odd that the spray’s ingredients weren’t listed on the label, Eagle was tickled pink by its Barbie-like appearance.

But after just 24 hours of sun-kissed sexiness, things quickly took a turn for the worse.

“I woke up the next morning and realized I couldn’t breathe properly,” Eagle said. “Then I noticed it was completely swollen.

“I was out of breath and had to focus on breathing. It was really hard to breathe,” she recalled.

“His neck was swollen and the necklace was tight. He was swollen everywhere,” his mother added. “I realized it must be an allergic reaction,” she said.

Eagle was taken to a nearby emergency room, where medical personnel immediately administered steroids to slow the spread of the poison throughout her body.

“I’ve never had an allergic reaction to anything in my life,” Eagle said. “I’m sure it was a spray.

“There are no ingredients listed on the bottle. You don’t know what you’re putting in your body.”

She credits hospital staff who acted quickly with saving her life.

“If the hospital staff hadn’t acted so quickly, I wouldn’t be standing here,” a grateful Eagle told Kennedy News. “I was thrown straight into the air. It was very scary.”

Months after the tragic incident, Eagle and Fox discovered a community online of people who had also faced death due to Melanotan.

“I’ve seen other people on social media reacting to the spray the same way I did, and their symptoms were exactly the same,” Eagle said.

Her stepdaughter even issued a de facto recommendation for a runny nose that seemed too good to be true.

“Don’t use nose tanners as they can do this,” Fox’s warning post reads. “I poisoned my stepmother’s body, so she had an allergic reaction. Stay away from them. Over time, the poison builds up. They are very dangerous to some people.”

Eagle also urges others to avoid nasal nightmares.

“It was scary for my family to see me like that,” she said. “I feel grateful to be alive.

“Please don’t make the same mistake I did,” Eagle begged.

“If this can save someone’s life, I’d rather suffer for someone else before they make a stupid decision like I did!”
