About the series
The Sun Times in Chicago investigated people with long-term, untreated mental illnesses accused of violence in downtown Chicago. This series explores the gaps in the system aimed at helping attack situations, victims, and people at risk.
Frank Maine began his newspaper career in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1987, where he worked in Louisiana and Kentucky, covering local politics and crime. He was on the ground in the aftermath of Hurricanes Andrew and Katrina, the Bosnian conflict, the first Gulf War and the 9/11 attacks in New York. In 2011, Maine, another reporter and photographer, won the Pulitzer Prize for their stories in sunbathing about the “Northinich Code” among victims of gun violence in Chicago. In that project, Main spent six months being embedded in a murder detective. He graduated from the graduate journalism program at Emory and Northwestern University and teaches journalism at Loyola University.
