Many people who embark on a New Year’s health kick fear they’ll put the weight back on later.
However, evidence suggests that for dieters who are serious about losing weight, it can take up to two years to lose a pound.

Stayed slimmer for at least 5 years compared to people who weren’t on a weight loss program.
The improvement in quality of life after weight loss was found to last an average of nine years.
This review looked at people who received intensive support to lose weight over an average of six months, primarily through diet and exercise.
Other results showed that five years after completing a weight loss program, blood pressure decreased and levels of “bad” cholesterol decreased.
Co-author of the review, Paul Aveyard, Professor of Behavioral Medicine at the University of Oxford, said: .
“People are more likely to remember what they learned about making healthy food choices and continue to strive to lose weight even after they stop dieting, which is very important.
“People often go on and off diets over the years, but these results show that weight loss and health benefits can be long-lasting.
“Our review looked at people with the help of a health care professional, but we expect the results to hold true for people who lost weight by dieting on their own.”
Losing weight after dieting can be difficult as old habits are revived and the excitement of dropping a dress size wears off.
However, a review published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism found that people who undertook a rigorous weight loss program regained only a small amount each month, equivalent to about 0.22 kg (0.22 kg) per year. rice field.
The study compared overweight people working on a weight loss diet plan, slimming program, or class to a control group.
The control group received no dietary advice, minimal dietary advice, or basic support for weight loss.
On average, those on a weight loss program lost just over 6 pounds (2.8 kg) more than controls.
And an analysis of all the study results revealed that they remained leaner than the control group for at least five years.
There hasn’t been enough research lasting more than five years to know if slim people can expect to stay slim longer.
Regarding the improvement in quality of life, Professor Aveyard said: .
“This may be because there is an association between having a high BMI and feeling low, as they may be biologically related.”
