Chesterfield County, Va. – The Chesterfield County program helps residents properly store and dispose of their medicine.
The county is handing out free waste pouches and medication lock boxes.
The goal is to keep the medications you are currently using safe and keep expiration of medications away from your children.
“If you have any medications, vitamins, or over-the-counter medications you’re using now, it’s great to leave them locked up in these bags. “Sixty-one percent of teenagers say they get prescription medications from friends and family at home, so if you have them, lock them up.”
Disposal pouches are an eco-friendly alternative to washing out expired medicines in the toilet.
All you have to do is open the pouch, insert the medicine, add water, and shake the bag.
You can then throw the pouch into the trash can.
“Unfortunately, more than 70,000 children go to the ER every year due to unintended drug addiction,” Butler said. “So, ‘Oh, this really helped me. I have grandchildren in the house. I have little kids in the house and I have to take these medications, so this is a great alternative.”
