How a group class groupie turned into a home gym fan

For over a decade, I have been a dedicated “gym class” exerciser. I don’t name a particular gym, but I can make pretty good guesses about the places that Djoko’s mom might visit frequently. From sweaty spin and weight classes, I wore a chest strap while rowing, running and lifting, earning “points” and tried everything (and almost loved!).

I have always been adored by people like my sister and have been able to exercise consistently for years in her basement. I always say, “If you’re not paying a cancellation fee and you’re competing with your classmates, I’m not motivated enough to show up and continue.”

When Covid began in March 2020, I actually welcomed a break and told myself I deserved a few weeks off from exercise. I thought I would just let it sit until everything passed. Well, we know what it turned out…

After about two months of being isolated, I became an avid walker, but I didn’t do anything for strength training so I finally decided to invest a little money in the basics of my basement home gym. did.

Well, here I am over 3 years later and I still exercise in the basement 4-5 days a week. I’m still using the same basic equipment. I love saving money every month in better shape than ever.

The first real key was to find a YouTube channel and instructor that perfectly matched my goals. i follow Caroline Gilvan I posted nearly 700 videos, mainly using dumbbells or body weights. One thing I really like about her channel is that in addition to one-off videos, there are multiple fitness series or challenges that last between 6 and 10 weeks each. And I love that she doesn’t talk during training! She gives a short intro to outline the session for the day. Then, it’s just music that you can mute while you’re playing yourself. Oh, and the other best part? All her content is free!

Next, I had to stock some basics at the gym. I have been working out consistently without any additional purchases for three years. Here are my recommendations and sources for everything you need to stay strong:

  • Yoga mat – This is the basic starting point to prevent slipping while working on the floor. I went to the basics Gaiam printed with yoga mat from the targetand it is wonderfully endured! $24.99
  • Groot Band – I got 3 packs Renoj Band on Amazon But it would have saved me a lot of money in one, as it only uses heavy tension. These are good because they are made of strong fabrics rather than latex. They should not give you extra pressure and pinch your skin. $15.90
  • Yoga Block – Use a Basic yoga blocks from Amazon Give more movement with uneven push-ups, rebellion rows, squats. It is also used several times a week for high-heel squats. It’s small and inexpensive, but sturdy. $9.99
  • Adjustable bench – I went easily Reebok Bench on Amazon I mainly use it for hip collisions, Bulgarian lunges, and Trisep dips. I bench press on the floor. Go to the diagram. $219
  • Adjustable dumbbells – Dumbbells are the biggest investment I have made and the only weight I use. In short, if you don’t pay $100 a month for a gym class, your expenses will pay itself within five months. There is a BowFlex set that is adjusted from 5 pounds to 52.5 pounds each. Plus, they’re great space savings, taking up only about 2 square feet of floor space. $429

Total Investment – $699
