House Democrats in Indiana say the state budget should prioritize public education, healthcare funding and working-class Hoosiers relief.
House Republican Budget The increase in K-12 education funding increased by 2% each year. However, a significant portion of that will be sent to private schools through an extension of the voucher program.
Rep. Greg Porter (D-Indianapolis) said his Caucus proposal HB 1001 Increases funding for all public schools by 2%.
“The fine line between saving dollars and the funding programmes people need,” Porter said.
GOP budgets do not eliminate waiting lists with Medicaid funds. Porter said Democrats hope to put enough money in Medicaid to not only clear those waitlists, but also add $300 million.
“There’s no way to put your head in the sand and say there’s no cut. I’m going to cut it. Federal levelPorter said. “You need to be ready.”

House Democrats’ budget plans will rescind the cuts made by both Gov. Mike Brown and House Republicans Health First Indiana Programthis year it provided $150 million to the local public health department.

Porter said his Caucus financial priorities include universal funding for the On Way Pre-K program, an increase of 12% (up from 10%) in income tax credits earned, and tenant deductions starting from $3,000. It also includes an increase to $4,000.
To help pay the Democrats’ budget proposal, Porter said the state should increase tobacco and alcohol taxes and reduce school voucher programs. Stop future tax cuts.
