Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that she “doesn’t understand” Americans who support Russian President Vladimir Putin in his war against Ukraine.
Clinton: “I don’t understand why Americans are siding with Putin, but we’ve seen it and heard it, and we have to fight it.” Said In an interview with PBS NewsHour’s Jeff Bennett.
Clinton was asked by Bennett about the “widening” rift in U.S. politics over funding and support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia and how the Russian leader views it. Ta. She said she thought President Putin was “excited” about the split.
“I think he’s fueling it as well,” Clinton said. “A large part of President Putin’s perception of his role is that he and his team intervene overtly and covertly with the aim of undermining democracy and belittling political leaders.”
Her comments come in the wake of recent tensions in Congress over funding to Ukraine as a potential government shutdown looms. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he had “questions” about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy when asked about new funding for Ukraine earlier this month.
“Where is the responsibility for the money we’ve already spent?” McCarthy said, listing questions he said he would ask when he meets with Ukrainian leaders later in the week. “What is your plan for victory?”
“Listen, what Russia did, the invasion, was wrong,” McCarthy later continued. “It’s an atrocity. We want to make sure it ends. And I’ve always said from the beginning, no matter what the issue is, what hard-working taxpayers spend their money on is Whatever it is, I need accountability and a plan for victory.”
