Background

Adequate access to macro- and micronutrients has important effects on cognitive performance, mood and mental health. Although it was recognized early on that nutrition plays an important role in the performance of elite athletes, the intake of specific macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) has been associated with future development of depressive symptoms in elite adolescent athletes. Little is known about whether to predict.

method

Participants were recruited from the three Swiss Olympic Partner Schools (SOPS) in northwest German-speaking Switzerland. A total of 97 adolescent elite athletes (38% female, M.Year = 16.35 ± 1.19) participated in the study. Depressive symptoms (PHQ9) were assessed at baseline and after his 10-month follow-up. A 3-day food recall was completed after his 3 months of baseline evaluation.
