The New York Attorney General’s Office health care helpline resolved complaints from more than 4,800 consumers and helped New Yorkers recover illegal medical costs and insurance denials.
New York Attorney General Letitia James said Wednesday that her office’s healthcare helpline has recovered more than $4.6 million in reparations and savings for New Yorkers over the past two years, with thousands of residents supporting medical disputes and insurance claims.
The Healthcare Department’s helpline, which was a team of supporters, handled more than 4,800 consumer complaints in 2023 and 2024, and, according to a reporter’s release, mistakenly refused to revive an accidental denied claim, a claim error, and a cancellation of health insurance.
The service is overseen by Deputy Attorney General Meghan Fake and First Assistant Attorney General Jennifer Levy and operates under the Social Justice Department. It provided guidance to over 2,000 additional consumers and helped navigate complex healthcare concerns.
in Recently released reportsThe firm said the main cases and systematic issues identified through consumer complaints include cancer patients who lost their jobs and suffered $11,000 in healthcare costs after being given misinformed about their health insurance status, and homeless patients who were mistakenly charged more than $1,000 after pledging full financial support for hospital care.
James urged New Yorkers to contact the helpline if they believe they were mistakenly charged or denied for necessary medical care. This service also helps to remove inappropriate medical obligations from your credit report.
“A holding company that recovers thousands of dollars in illegal medical expenses, ensures access to life-saving treatments or is responsible for deceptive practices, my office is committed to fighting for New York patients and protecting their rights,” James said.
